Fallopian tube ligation (i.e. “tying the fallopian tubes”) is operation to block the fallopian tubes — the tubes that join the ovaries to the womb — so that she can no longer get pregnant (i.e. sterile).Usually, the fallopian tubes move ovum from the ovary to the womb once in 28 days. If a male’s sperm cell fuses up with an ovum, tubal reversal pregnancy may result. If the tubes are blocked, or “tied,” sperm cells can’t fertilize an egg, and conception will not occur.Tubal operation is done in the hospital or outpatient clinic while you are under anesthesia. The doctor will make one or two small cuts in your belly area, usually near the belly button. The surgeon will insert a narrow tube with a photographic camera on the end (laparoscope) into the pelvis region. Surgical instruments to tie the fallopian tubes are introduced via the laparoscope. The fallopian tubes are either heated shut (i.e. cauterizations) or shut off by using a small pin.
