“Sure they can” is my immediate answer……BUT!!
I think that you must approach your headshot in exactly the same way as you approach every aspect of your acting career. By that I mean, in an utterly professional manner. Why spend years and tons of money attending acting classes learning your craft, doing courses on vocal projection and accents and pursuing an acting Agent. You put in all the hard work and preparation for your showcase and then you go and spoil it all by having an amateur second-rate headshot?
A headshot will never “just do” it has to grab the attention of the viewer and shout out at them ‘look at me’, it has to be fantastic, and it has to be engaging.
It’s such a massive risk to take with your career so why would anyone serious about being taken serious in this business take a risk like that? It’s crazy!
There are so many specialist headshot photographers who understand what Casting Directors and Agents are looking for in a headshot, they know what the current styles are, what kind of lighting gets the best out of the your shape face and what style of headshot is most suitable for your market.
A specialist headshot photographer will encourage, guide and advise you, they’ll help you get the very best out of you in terms of your pose, your emotional content and your connectivity to the person viewing it – in my opinion the most important part of your actors headshot
You must to remember that your headshot only has a split second to make an impression with an Agent or Casting Director, so it has to make the right impression! It must inspire them to take a closer look at you and your CV, not to toss it straight in the rubbish.
